we hope that everyone made the most of their 3 day weekend. we decided on taking a quick 1 day trip to san francisco on saturday. it was beautiful weather, clear skies and plenty of sunshine, it was actually almost hot, 80 degrees. we wished we would have worn shorts and flip flops!
we arrived in the city around 11:00 and headed straight here, ferry building , and started wandering around checking it all out. i dont know if you have ever been there, but wow. there are so many vendors and booths to see and check out and everything looks amazing. fruit and vegetables and meats and cheeses and smoked salmon and honey and. and. and. and the samples, oh the samples. just about every stand has samples set out for you to get a taste of all the goodness they have to offer. we had packed an ice chest and filled it with ice so that we could shop to our hearts content, but we left there with only 4 things. we would have had absolutely no problem filling our ice chest with everything we could get our hands on, but we figured that as far as fruits and vegetables go, we could just get those from our local farmers market. we also didnt want to spend hundreds of dollars, so we only brought home a few things- spicy hummus, strawberry lantern jam, salumi, and a ferry building farmers market canvas tote. the strawberry lantern jam- fruity and sweet with just a hint of heat from the lantern peppers they put in it. we think it will be great with cream cheese and crackers , on a toasted bagel, or with goat cheese and crackers. we also bought some salami from boccalone
and it was yummy. they have a small shop set up inside the ferry building and they have a small menu of a few sandwiches that they offer and a good selection of different salumi that you can purchase there.
this bike is parked outside of the salumi shoppe and during the week they will make 50 of one type of sandwich and fill up the cooler in the front and then deliver them to random, revolving locations around the city. people in the know find out where they will be delivering to each day through twitter and and then they post up, mouths salivating, waiting to hear the delivery guy coming around the corner. tasty salted pig parts!
after the market we headed across town to this place for lunch magnolia gastropub and brewery . after driving around for 20 minutes looking for parking, we found a spot only 2 blocks away and in the shade! the universe must have been smiling upon us. magnolia pub is in the haight/ashbury part of town with lots of funky shops lining the streets. the pub itself is a quirky little place- water marks stain the ceiling, there’ s a framed picture of jerry garcia on a little ledge on one wall, and the bathrooms are unisex with a shared long white antique sink for washing up complete with white washcloths instead of paper towels. i may not be doing it justice but it is very charming. daniel ordered the burger and i had the fried chicken sandwich and we both had a couple beers. both of our meals were tasty and came with some crispy + salty french fries. daniel had the prescription pale ale and i had the ipa, both delicious. next time i am going to try the fried green tomato sandwich- fried green tomatoes, tabasco aioli, herbed goat cheese and roasted peppers. yes, please.
we were actually pretty tired after these 2 places ( oh man, we lag) and so we decided to head north. we hit the road, stopped in vacaville to pick up some groceries at one of our favorite grocery stores, nugget, and made it home by 730. we had a great day, great food and the best company i could ask for…and look what was waiting for us when we got home!
