So our wedding is one week from today and everything is falling into place. And believe me, I’m very happy and excited about it, but this whole event has got me thinking. The wedding industry is just a big sham. DJ’s, Florists, Caterers, Wedding planners and the like are all ridiculously priced but “necessary” to have a wedding. Granted you need some sort of entertainment, decorations, food and organization for a wedding to be fun, but the outrageous prices that come about as soon as you say the word “wedding” are completely baffling.
The actual wedding event is not even about the act of marrying of two people. It’s something that was developed to make sure that the two individuals getting married were right for each other. What other life event makes you argue with your partner about normally trivial things like the color of a tablecloth or the shape of a flower pot? When planning a wedding you have to seriously consider all aspects of your relationship to get through to the actual event.
Cooperation is a pretty obvious aspect in all of this and without it you’re not getting married. If you and you’re partner argue all the time, how easy is it going to be to agree on all of the small stuff?
Financial planning is normally handled by mortgage companies and stockbrokers, but if the two of you don’t have that under control, it doesn’t matter how big or small your wedding is. If you don’t have a way to pay all the bills after everything is said and done, you’re going to have bigger problems than getting a face full of cake.
Organization skills are a must in order to have everything fall into place on that one day and time. Before we decided on a date for our wedding, I thought that it would be simple to plan in 3months. Heh. Boy I was wrong. Not only is it not simple, but I can easily see why people take a year or more to plan their wedding. It’s so easy for you and you’re partner to get caught up in all of the small details involved that you forget that you need something so basic as ice for the drinks. It is no wonder that wedding planners can make a fortune doing what they do. Jackie has done an absolutely amazing job planning our wedding and I am so proud of how she has handled everything.
And thank god for what the wedding is actually a celebration of, love, because if you and you’re partner don’t really, really, really, really love each other… you’re not going to make it through the cake tasting.
mmmm, cake.
